The Northwest Territories is renowned for its breathtaking Northern Lights, and Hay River is the perfect location to witness their captivating displays almost every night.

These spacious 3-bedroom cottages have three queen-size beds and comfortably accommodate up to six guests, providing a relaxing and cozy atmosphere during your stay. Each cottage includes a full bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, and outdoor space for socializing, enjoying some solitude, and is the perfect spot to watch for northern lights.

Aurora Borealis is on everyone's list and our northern location does not disappoint! Hay River, celebrated for its peaceful allure, transforms into Northern Light paradise. Discover secluded viewing spots right at Castaways Cottages & Campgrounds or in the nearby Territorial Parks, for a truly captivating experience. The tranquil scenery contributes a distinctive element to the celestial display, elevating the entire adventure. Whether you are a first time aurora hunter or a seasoned pro, viewing the northern lights in Hay River is a truly mesmerizing experience.

Fishing is always a must! Whether fishing in the Hay River or fishing in North America’s deepest lake – Great Slave Lake, this location is on every angler’s bucket list! Chock full of several species including Arctic Grayling, Northern Pike, Whitefish and Lake Trout, you and your fishing pals won’t be disappointed.

Hiking is a great way to experience our northern wilderness! Enjoy a scenic nature hike along the shoreline right at Castaways to view a variety of bird, mammal and plant species. There are also many other hiking trails in the nearby area, including one at the twin falls Territorial park where the hike takes you from Louise Falls to Alexandra Falls along the Hay River.

Waterfalls are for chasing and our community is incredibly lucky to have eight stunning waterfalls located within a three-hour drive. Visitors from around the globe travel to experience these breathtaking cascades. The self-guided tours are a must-add to your bucket list of adventures. The spectacular landscape of steep riverbanks contrasting with boreal forest is surely a sight to see!

Skiing is a favourite pastime for many of us. The Hay River Ski Club provides an excellent selection of both classic and skate trails suitable for all skill levels. These trails vary in length, ranging from 0.5 km to an impressive 10 km. Equipment rentals are available.

Curling is a Canadian favourite, and the Hay River Curling Club hosts league, championship & bonspiel events through the winter months.

The Aurora Ford Arena offers scheduled ice times for public skating, shinning, U7 to U18 and rec hockey practices and games. There are also four outdoor rinks around Hay River.

The Fisherman’s Wharf Pavilion is the place to be on Saturdays from June through September when Vale Island transforms into a vibrant hotspot for both locals and tourists. From the fresh caught fish to the fresh garden veggies, craft vendors and live music, this is a great place for all to visit!

 

How To Get Here

BY AIR Castaway Cottages & Campgrounds can be reached by air throughout the year via the Hay River airport. The airport accommodates numerous regional flights from the territory and surrounding provinces. 

BY HIGHWAY We can be reached by taking the NWT paved highway 2, commonly called the Hay River Highway into Hay River, then follow the roadside signs for Castaways which is located at 6 Lagoon Road, Hay River NT, X0E 0R4.
